Back from Rocking the Forks Over Knives and VBB&F Booths at Asheville VegFest!

Phew! Back home after a lot of bouncing around to the West Coast and the mountains of North Carolina and it’s time to catch up!

For those of you who don’t know yet (just about everybody, that is), we’re expecting our first baby!!!! That’s my excuse for slacking off on the posting and correspondence for the past couple of months – I’m normally an absolute Type A personality, never without several projects and activities going on at once, but all-day “morning” sickness and insane fatigue have me firmly in their grip. So any extra time I’d normally use to post is instead spent…napping. Derek’s excited anyway: for once I want to spend as much time resting as he does and he doesn’t have to deal with my constant goading.

Needless to say, I won’t be competing this September as planned, but I like to think that instead I’m in training for a much larger event. Still working out every day, and I’ll be updating my training logs on the forums soon for anyone who’s curious about a pregnancy routine – there really isn’t a lot of info out there (see links to our training logs on the right)!

We’ve just returned from an all-too-brief weekend in Asheville, N.C., manning both a Vegan Bodybuilding and Fitness booth and a Forks Over Knives booth!

We had the first Forks Over Knives DVDs available for sale anywhere, and as we both firmly believe that the film will change the life of just about anyone who sees it, it was an honor to be able to get it out to so many people there, some of whom hadn’t even heard of it yet but bought a copy anyway! If you’re one of those people, feel free to let us know what you thought! I hope to soon host a screening here in Richmond, or maybe several, where we can make even more copies available and continue to get the word out.

The only tough part of the day was not having a tent – man it was hot and sunny! Chance of thunderstorms my ass! Fortunately, our friend William came all the way up from medical school in SC to visit our booths and bought me an umbrella as a first baby shower gift, hah! Look how happy Derek looks in the shade:

Asheville is an awesome place – we’ve been there on vacation before as well. In the town itself, on any given night you’ll pass a variety of musicians and other performers like these guys who’ll hold these poses for hours.

There’s also a ridiculous amount of outdoor beauty to enjoy in the several national parks that are nearby, with things like waterfalls and mountain pools to swim in.

Asheville is also home to one of our favorite vegetarian restaurants ever, Laughing Seed. On our last week-long trip, we ate there every single day. This time we ate there for dinner each night, check it out:

Pistachio-crusted seitan filet in vegan mushroom marsala cream
Watermelon sorbet and fresh peach and blueberry galette
Raw Spinach-Pesto Manicotti

Jealous??

And don’t forget: we’re having another Plant-Based Potluck this Sunday at 6:30 – I’ll be posting on it here and on FB shortly. We’ve got some new books and videos in our lending library to share!
